How to Qualify for an ABSA B-Pressure Certificate of Competency

In Alberta, before you can weld on pressure equipment, you must be qualified by ABSA, the organization that regulates pressure equipment in the province of Alberta.

ABSA offers several different qualifications, called “Certificates of Competency.” (see descriptions of the different certificates of competency) This webpage is concerned specifically with the ABSA B-Pressure Certificate of Competency.

The B-Pressure Certificate of Competency can only be issued by an ABSA Safety Codes Officer. To earn the Certificate, you need to pass a practical welding test. Here’s how to get ready for the test:

  1. Find out what the test involves by looking at the ABSA Test Syllabus for B-Pressure Tests.
  2. Check the test schedule of locations and dates.
  3. Download a Test Application Form, then complete it and return it to ABSA. The application form includes information on cutoff dates for applying.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens when I pass the B-Pressure Competency Test?

When you pass, you will be issued a B-Pressure Welder Certificate of Competency AND a PQ (Performance Qualification) Card.

What's the difference between a Certificate of Competency and a PQ Card?

The B-Pressure Welder Certificate of Competency is a permanent certificate that can only be issued by an ABSA Safety Codes Officer. A PQ (Performance Qualification) Card is a temporary qualification that expires and can be renewed by testing at any authorized testing facility, including Qualimet.

What if I fail the B-Pressure Certificate of Competency Test?

There are restrictions on how soon you can re-test—see the last page of the B-Pressure Test Syllabus for information.

Once I pass the test, how can I take additional PQ tests?

Once you pass the test, if you want to get additional pressure welding qualifications under the same class of certificate, you can take additional PQ tests at any authorized testing facility, including Qualimet. See more on our ABSA PQ testing program.

How long is the Certificate of Competency good for?

The Certificate of Competency is a permanent certificate, but the PQ card will expire. It is your responsibility to apply for re-qualification before your PQ card expires. Qualimet can help.

What if my PQ Card expires?

If your PQ card expires, you will not be allowed to weld on pressure equipment until you re-qualify by taking the applicable PQ test. Therefore, it's a good idea to always get your PQ card renewed before it expires.

How do I renew my PQ card?

As long as you have a valid Certificate of Competency, you may renew your PQ card at any authorized testing facility, including Qualimet. See more on our ABSA PQ testing program.

What if I fail a PQ test?

If you fail a PQ test, you can re-test as soon as you want to.
